Stitching to Stop Domestic Violence

A local campaign to give back to survivors of domestic abuse in our area

We are pleased to partner with the Stop Domestic Violence department within Children and Family Services in Plattsburgh, NY to provide handmade items to women and children in Franklin, Essex, and Clinton counties. We are also reaching out to community members for their support to brighten the winter for survivors of domestic violence.

The need for knitted and crocheted items is paramount during the frigid North Country winters. Many of the women and children who benefit from these handmade goods have had to flee their homes to escape from domestic violence. Often, they arrive at the Stop Domestic Violence department’s confidential emergency safe havens with only the clothes on their backs.

“I want everyone to feel included and a part of this, if they choose to participate,” said Dawn Smith, the knitting group’s contact with Children and Family Services. “It was just an idea I had. Women knitting for other women and children; how cool is that?”

We need hand knit or crocheted items in adult and children’s sizes such as:

  • hats,
  • scarves,
  • mittens,
  • Afghans,
  • baby blankets,
  • toys/amigurumi, and
  • socks

If you’re unable to knit or crochet, our knitting group has you covered. Just bring yarn to donate, and we will make something extra special to those in need. Drop off donations at Adirondack Yarns 2241 Saranac Avenue. Though the need is essential during winter, this is a year-round program to help victims of domestic abuse.
